As part of our Eco Church commitment, we record the species that live in or pass through our church gardens. In January it is time to count the birds as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. Several of us counted for an hour after the Sunday morning service on 25th January 2026.
We counted:
- 11 different species and 19 individual birds
- Blackbird – 1
Blue tit – 3
- Dunnock – 1
- House Sparrow – 3
- Greenfinch – 1
- Magpie – 2
- Great tit – 1
- Wood pigeon – 2
- Starling – 2
- Wren – 1
- Jackdaw – 2
The highlights were seeing a pair of blue tits investigating one of the next boxes in the memorial garden and a tiny wren appear briefly from the hedge.
Thank you to all who helped look for the birds and just took a moment to enjoy the church gardens, chat about birds or read the bird related Bible verses on the annexe tables.
