Churchwardens’ Report

September 2009

It has been a busy couple of months for St Augustine’s starting with a very well attended “Away Day” in the peaceful setting of St Mary’s Barcombe at the end of June. This was organised by Julie as part of her month long placement with us and the theme for the day was “How Great is our God”. Mark spoke about five important figures in the bible: Abraham, Moses, Ezekiel, Jesus and Paul, and then Julie talked about Jesus and Peter walking on the water and the need to trust in God in our daily lives. There were several group discussions followed by a shared lunch outside and a walk.

Mark celebrated his 40th birthday with well over thirty of our congregation in the Vicarage garden at the beginning of July and again we had fine weather. The following weekend while Mark was attending General Synod we welcomed Barry North and Jean Sedgley at our morning services and Jeremy Taylor who spoke at Kairos in the evening on the subject of “Video Ergo Sum”

Also in July a large group from St Augustine’s attended an evening service at St Margaret’s West Hoathly for all the churches in our local “cluster”. Tom helped to provide the music for the evening and we stayed afterwards for refreshments and an opportunity to meet people from nearby churches.

The Film Club, which meets in the village club, started up again in July and the first film was Hotel Rwanda. The African theme continues with the next few films. The Home Group continues to meet once a fortnight and a new group is starting shortly for those who attended the recent Alpha course and any others who wish to study the Bible.

Congratulations to Gwyneth and Derek Paine who celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on 22 August.

Looking ahead to the autumn, our Harvest Supper will be held on Saturday 3rd October at 7.00 pm in the school hall. There will be a list at the back of church in September for anyone who would like to attend and offers of food would be appreciated. Tickets will cost £6. This will be followed by our Harvest Festival service on the Sunday at 10.00 am.

With best wishes.
